Ep. 63 - Geeking Out over Moving with Plants
Moving with plants has been Matthew’s life for the last week,
so today you get to listen in on a casual geeky plant chat between the Plant Daddies, as one wraps up a move across town with over 400 plants, and the other contemplates a move himself. We talk strategies, process, challenges, and outcomes for Matthew’s plants, and unpack the hassle involved in moving with "more than a few" plants! Was anything dropped or smashed? Press play and end the suspense!
(We didn’t mention it in the episode, but this is a critical time to quarantine sick plants, if not dispose of them completely - you absolutely want to avoid packing a pest-infected plant in stressful close-proximity to healthy plants to avoid widespread infestation! Matthew definitely had a box of quarantine plants that never mingled with the healthy ones.)
Mentioned in this episode:
how to prepare your plants in the weeks leading up to a move
how to physically manage the big, heavy, vining, or otherwise awkward plants - is propagation and starting over the best choice for some?
how to protect the small or fragile ones and keep them from getting crushed, lost, or forgotten
dealing with providing critical needs during the move - water, light, and temperatures
During, after, and months later, the plants faired pretty well, and ended up loving their new conditions! Moving is a great time to reflect on what plants bring you joy (in case it’s useful to narrow down your collection) and then assess what growing conditions you have available in the new space, how you want to arrange them, and learn what adjustments you need to make from your prior care routines. Then you get to just sit back and watch them acclimate and establish in their - and your! - new home.
